It was the 30th November 2008. It was the day Chinen had been waiting for the whole year, his 15th birthday. But, of all days, he just had to have chickenpox. Now, Chinen was quarantined in bed, feeling itchy, and wasn’t able to spend his birthday with his friends.
Chinen sighed. “Happy birthday, Chinen Yuri,” he said to himself for the tenth time that day. That morning, his parents came, bringing in a cake. They sang happy birthday to him, and they ate the cake together. He even received text messages from the members of JUMP, and phone call from Yamada and Yuto but it was still not enough. There was something missing.
That evening, Chinen put down the manga he was reading at the side table. He looked out the window with a sigh. How he wished he could play outside at this moment. Being quarantined in his room is boring.
Chinen’s face perked up when he heard the doorbell to his house rang. ‘Did the others come to visit?’ He sat properly on his bed, waiting eagerly. 5 minutes he waited, no one came up. His hope fell. He was about to go under cover, when the door to his bedroom opened a little.
One familiar head popped in the room. “Chinen, are you awake?”
Chinen’s eyes widened when he heard Ryutaro’s voice, a tint of blush appeared on his cheeks. Just this time, he was thankful for the spots on his face. “R-Ryutaro, what are you doing here?” Unknown to the younger boy, Chinen had fallen in love with him for awhile now.
“I just thought you might get lonely to be alone on your birthday,” Ryutaro answered. He sat on a chair beside Chinen’s bed. “I brought pastries.”
“But won’t you get infected too?”
“Don’t worry about me, I already had my chicken pox,” Ryutaro explained. “However, the rest of the members have not, that’s why they couldn’t come.”
“Its better that way,” Chinen muttered under his breath.
“Did you say something, Chinen?” Ryutaro was putting the pastries on the table at that time.
Chinen blushed even more. “E-Eh? Nothing,” he said. Suddenly, the younger boy went closer to Chinen, so close that Chinen could even feel Ryutaro’s breath. His cheeks grew warmer as his heart beats fast.
“R-Ryutaro, w-what are you doing?”
“Chinen, has anyone told you how beautiful your eyes are?” Ryutaro asked out of the blue. The only thing he could do is shook his head.
Before Chinen could react, Ryutaro moved forward and kissed Chinen on the lips. Chinen’s eyes widened in surprise, and he didn’t know how red his face was right now. All he knew was Ryutaro tasted sweet. After Ryutaro pulled apart, he said, “Happy birthday, Chinen Yuri.”
“R-R-Ryutaro!” Chinen said, maybe a little panicked. “What was that?”
Ryutaro looked at the floor. “I love you, Chinen,” he said. “For a long time now, I love you.” With each words said, Ryutaro’s cheeks grew redder and redder.
Chinen’s face broke into a smile. “I have a secret too, Ryutaro,” Chinen said. He whispered in the younger’s boy ear, “I love you too.”
As they embraced, Ryutaro said, “I’ll give your present to you when you feel better, Chii.”
Chinen chuckled. “I’ll be waiting.”
In the end, Chinen didn’t care he was quarantined on his birthday. At least he got one thing he wanted, which is, Ryutaro’s love.
